Lanoviss is one person in Vancouver, British Columbia, making one object: a sauna hat pressed from a single piece of 3 mm 100% merino felt, in five colours, at $59.99 CAD. There is no second product, no apparel line and no accessories range. This is the account of how that happened, including the parts that are unfinished.
Every fact below is checkable on this site. Where something is not finished yet, it says so.
What is Lanoviss?
A single-product company, run by one person, shipping from Canada. The name comes from Latin — lana, wool, and ovis, sheep — with an extra s on the end because that was the spelling nobody had taken.

Why only sauna hats?
Because the founder got the object wrong the first time and would like fewer people to repeat that. The first sauna hat here was the cheapest synthetic one on Amazon, worn for a few sessions, and it did close to nothing — which led to the reasonable conclusion that sauna hats are mostly theatre.
They are not. The second hat was wool, and the difference was not subtle: the scalp and ears stopped taking the worst of the heat, and a full round stopped ending early. The whole company is that correction, written out at length on the About page and in the material breakdown of merino versus regular wool versus synthetic.
One object also means the specification can be argued over properly. Thickness, brim depth, ear coverage and the size of the hanging loop are all decisions somebody had to make on purpose, and with one product they get made carefully rather than delegated to a catalogue.
What is actually in the hat?
Three millimetres of pressed merino felt, one piece, no stitching. Cheap sauna hats are usually wool cut with acrylic or polyester, and that shows up in a hot room: synthetic fibre traps damp against the scalp instead of moving it away, and it scorches on contact with a hot stove guard.
Merino matters for a second reason. Merino fibre is far finer than ordinary wool, so it bends against wet skin instead of prickling it — the reason a wool hat does not have to be itchy. The physics of why any of this works at 90 °C is set out in do sauna hats actually work, with sources.
The seam is the other deliberate absence. A seam is a comfort problem when you lean back against a bench, and it is the first thing to fail in a room that goes from 90 °C to room temperature several times a week. Felting the hat as one piece removes both problems at once.
Who makes them, and where?
They are made in China, by a factory the founder has worked with for years on a completely unrelated product, long before this shop existed. That relationship is the reason this is a written specification rather than a catalogue pick — dyes are approved as non-toxic before a run starts, and the inspection standard is agreed up front instead of discovered at the end.
The honest part: the factory has not been visited in person yet. That visit is intended and has not happened, and saying so is better than letting the word "premium" imply something that has not been done.
Why five colours instead of one?
Because forest green and navy were not on the market and somebody wanted them. Nearly every sauna hat sold in North America is grey, white or natural, and that is where most sellers stop. Pink is stocked for the same reason in reverse: there is always someone who wants pink and almost nobody carries it.
Buying more than one lowers the price per hat, which is the only volume discount here:
| Set | Hats | Price (CAD) | Per hat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single hat | 1 | $59.99 | $59.99 |
| The Pair | 2 (gray, navy) | $79.99 | $40.00 |
| The Favourites / The Neutrals / For Two | 4 | $146.99 | $36.75 |
| The Collection | 5 (all colours) | $173.99 | $34.80, free shipping |
You can pick a single colour in the single merino wool sauna hat, or see all five together in the five-hat collection.
Is Lanoviss a real business or a dropshipper?
Real stock, held in Vancouver. That is the practical difference, and it shows up in one number: orders leave within one to two business days, which nobody shipping from a factory on the other side of the Pacific can do. Delivery is three to five business days inside Canada and five to eight to the United States.
Returns are the other tell. Thirty days on an unworn hat, and the return label is paid by us inside Canada and the US — a cost that only makes sense if you expect most people to keep the hat.
What buyers have said, verbatim:
"Very reliable and generous seller. Highly recommend."
— Kirill, verified Etsy buyer, August 2026
"So happy I bought this sauna hat!, the material feels sturdy, it arrived fast, definitely buy again!"
— Patricia, verified Etsy buyer, July 2026
Why did the shop change its name?
Because the original name was built on something that turned out not to be documented. This shop launched under a name borrowed from a supposed Finnish sauna goddess, and when the sources were actually checked — the Kalevala, the Finnish Literature Society archives, the standard handbooks — she was not in any of them.
The second correction is bigger. The felt sauna hat is a Russian banya object, not a Finnish one; traditional Finnish sauna practice does not use a hat at all. The full version, with sources, is in the folklore post, which was published here rather than left for someone else to find.
Renaming the company after the wool instead of after a folklore claim is the end of that thought. Finnish sauna culture is still what pulled this whole thing together. It just is not what the hat is made of.
What happens next?
More of the room, eventually. One hat in five colours is the whole catalogue today; if it keeps growing, the plan runs toward the other objects you actually use in a sauna, and much further out, cabins. None of that is close, and one object done properly beats five done badly.
The only durability figure available is a personal one: the founder's own hat is past thirty sessions and still holding its shape. That is not a lab test, and it is not presented as one.
Frequently asked questions
What is Lanoviss?
A one-person company in Vancouver, British Columbia, making a single product: a seamless sauna hat pressed from one piece of 3 mm 100% merino felt, in five colours, at $59.99 CAD for one hat and $173.99 CAD for all five.
What does the name Lanoviss mean?
It comes from the Latin lana (wool) and ovis (sheep), with an extra s added because it was the spelling nobody else had taken. The company is named after the material rather than after sauna culture, because the wool is the part that does the work.
Where are Lanoviss sauna hats made?
In China, to a written specification, by a factory the founder has worked with for years on a different product. Dyes are approved as non-toxic before a run starts. The factory has not been visited in person yet.
Where do Lanoviss hats ship from?
Vancouver, Canada. Stock is held locally, so orders leave within one to two business days — three to five business days to arrive in Canada, five to eight to the United States.
How much is a Lanoviss sauna hat?
$59.99 CAD for a single hat in any colour. Sets cost less per hat: $79.99 for two ($40.00 each), $146.99 for four ($36.75 each) and $173.99 for all five ($34.80 each, shipping included).
Will one size actually fit me?
Probably. The hat is about 70 cm around and roughly 27 × 30 cm laid flat, and the felt gives, so it settles on heads of about 55 to 61 cm. Fold the brim up for a smaller head, roll it down for a larger one. There is a full sauna hat size guide with a centimetre chart.
What is the return policy?
Thirty days on an unworn hat, with the return label paid by us inside Canada and the United States.
