Rí Sauna Crown Review: An Honest Rí vs Lanoviss Comparison

Rí Sauna Crown Review: An Honest Rí vs Lanoviss Comparison

By Fuentes, founder of Lanoviss. Published 1 September 2026.

The single most useful fact about the Rí Sauna Crown is a calendar entry, not a spec. As of 1 September 2026 it is a pre-order: Drop 01, limited to 200 numbered hats, charged at checkout, shipping the week of 22 October 2026, then 7 to 10 business days to Canada. If you want a sauna hat for a session this month, Rí cannot supply one. That is not a criticism of the product — it is how a limited drop works — but it decides the purchase for a lot of people before any other comparison matters.

If your timeline is flexible, the rest of this page is the honest version: what Rí does better than us, what we do better, and which claims on their site we could not verify. We sell a competing hat, so read it with that bias in mind and check their page yourself.

What is the Rí Sauna Crown?

Rí is an Irish brand operating from Carrowstrawly, Lanesboro, Co. Longford. The Sauna Crown is a €58.95 hat in 100% Australian merino wool, described as designed in Ireland, sold in one size for 54 to 62 cm heads, with an adjustable strap and an integrated hanging loop for drying. Rí rates it for 80 to 100 °C and publishes machine-wash instructions: cold, gentle, wool setting, reshape, lay flat, never tumble dry.

The company positions the hat at athletes and recovery, and its contact page names a person — Connell — as the one reading the inbox, alongside a published street address and phone number. In a category full of anonymous listings, that is worth something.

How much does the Rí Sauna Crown cost in Canadian dollars?

The listed price is €58.95 including EU VAT. Converting is less simple than it looks, so here is the arithmetic openly.

Scenario Calculation Approximate CAD
Straight conversion of the listed price €58.95 × 1.61 CAD/EUR ≈ $95
If Irish VAT (23%) is deducted for non-EU orders (€58.95 ÷ 1.23) × 1.61 ≈ $77
Lanoviss Listed in CAD $59.99

We did not add a Crown to a cart to find out which figure a Canadian actually pays, so we are not going to state one. Rí's site does offer a Canada (CAD $) setting, so the honest instruction is: switch their currency selector to CAD and read the number there rather than trusting our conversion or theirs. Either way it lands above our $59.99, and Rí's free worldwide shipping does not change that ordering.

Where does Rí win?

Several places, and one of them is a promise we do not make.

  • Lifetime craftsmanship guarantee. Rí states that if a seam fails or the wool pills beyond reason, they replace the hat. We do not offer a lifetime guarantee. If warranty length is what you are buying, this is not close.
  • Hardware we do not have. An adjustable strap and an integrated hanging loop. The loop in particular is a real convenience: a hat that hangs dries faster and more evenly than one folded on a bench. Ours has neither.
  • Published wash instructions. Cold, gentle, wool cycle, reshape, flat dry, never tumble. Specific and testable.
  • Sizing range. 54 to 62 cm against our 55 to 61 cm. One centimetre wider at each end. If your head is at either extreme, Rí fits you and we do not.
  • Free worldwide shipping and 30-day returns with a supplied label. Genuinely global, where we ship Canada and the US.
  • A named human and a published address. Connell, a phone number, and a registered address in Co. Longford.

The numbered limited edition is also a real thing if you value it. Two hundred hats, each embroidered with its number, is a different proposition from an item that restocks forever. We do not offer that and are not going to pretend it has no appeal.

Where does Lanoviss win?

Availability. Ours is in stock. Order today and it dispatches from Vancouver within one to two days, delivered in Canada in three to five. Rí's next hats exist in October. For a Canadian buying in September, that is a seven-week gap.

A published thickness. The Lanoviss merino wool sauna hat is 3 mm pressed felt, stated on the page. Rí publishes fibre (100% Australian merino) and a heat rating (80–100 °C) but no thickness in millimetres. Thickness is the number that determines how much insulating air the felt holds, and it is the one number a buyer can actually check against a caliper on arrival.

Seamless construction. Rí describes each Crown as cut, sewn and embroidered, and its guarantee explicitly covers the case where a seam fails. Ours is pressed as one piece with no seam across the crown. This matters because the seam is the thinnest line in a felt hat and it sits over the top of your head, which is the part of you nearest the ceiling and therefore in the hottest air in the room. We think that is worth engineering around. Rí evidently thinks a warranty is the better answer to the same problem. Both are defensible.

Price certainty for Canadians. Our price is a Canadian number for a parcel that never crosses a border. An Irish parcel into Canada involves a currency conversion, a VAT question, and whatever a Canadian customs officer decides — none of which is Rí's fault, all of which is your problem at the door.

"Very reliable and generous seller. Highly recommend."
— Kirill, verified Etsy buyer, August 2026

What claims on the Rí site could we not verify?

One, and we are flagging it because we would want the same flagged about us.

Rí's marketing states that a 2020 observational study found sauna hat users lasted 8 to 12 minutes longer per session. We could not find the study. No journal, no authors, no year beyond "2020", no link. The two papers Rí cites elsewhere — Laukkanen and colleagues in Mayo Clinic Proceedings (2018) and Cabanac in FASEB Journal (1993) — are real, published, and worth reading, but neither is a study of sauna hats. They are papers about sauna bathing and about selective brain cooling respectively.

Rí's separate claim that wool absorbs up to 30% of its own weight in moisture before feeling damp is a well-established property of wool and is reported accurately.

We do not think anyone at Rí is trying to mislead. Unattributed numbers propagate through this whole category — we called out an equivalent problem on Halsa's site in our comparison with them, and the reason we publish sources at the bottom of these posts is that we would rather be held to the same standard. If Rí publishes the citation, we will update this page.

Which one should you buy?

If you are… Buy Why
Wanting a hat for a sauna this week Lanoviss Rí's next hats ship the week of 22 October 2026
Buying on warranty length Rí Lifetime craftsmanship guarantee; we offer none
A head measuring 54 cm or 62 cm Rí Their range covers it, ours does not
Outside Canada, the US, Ireland and the EU Rí Free worldwide shipping; we ship CA and US
In Canada and price-sensitive Lanoviss $59.99 CAD, domestic parcel, no VAT or customs question
Wanting the spec published before you pay Lanoviss 3 mm, 100% merino, seamless, all on the page
Attracted to a numbered limited edition Rí 200 hats, individually numbered; we do not do drops

If you want ours, all five colours sit together in the merino wool sauna hat collection. If you are earlier in the decision than this, do sauna hats actually work is the better place to start, and merino versus regular wool versus synthetic covers why the fibre matters more than the branding on either site.

Frequently asked questions

Can you buy a Rí Sauna Crown right now?

Not for immediate delivery. As of 1 September 2026 it is Drop 01, a limited pre-order of 200 numbered hats. You are charged at checkout and the hats ship the week of 22 October 2026, then 7 to 10 business days to Canada and the US. Rí states that if production slips more than 14 days you can cancel for a full refund.

How much is the Rí Sauna Crown in Canadian dollars?

Listed at €58.95 including EU VAT. At the 1 September 2026 rate of 1.61 CAD per euro that is about $95 CAD; if Irish VAT of 23% is deducted for non-EU orders, roughly $77 CAD. Their site offers a Canada (CAD $) setting, so read the figure at their checkout rather than converting the euro price.

Does the Rí Sauna Crown have seams?

Rí describes each Crown as cut, sewn and embroidered, and its guarantee covers seam failure — both indicate a sewn construction. The Lanoviss hat is pressed as one piece with no crown seam. Neither is automatically better, but the seam sits where the air is hottest.

How thick is the Rí Sauna Crown?

Rí does not publish a millimetre thickness. It states 100% Australian merino wool and a rating for 80–100 °C. The Lanoviss hat is 3 mm pressed merino felt, stated on the product page.

Is the Rí claim that sauna hat users last 8 to 12 minutes longer true?

We could not verify it. The claim is attributed to an unnamed 2020 observational study with no journal, authors or link. The two papers Rí cites elsewhere — Laukkanen 2018 in Mayo Clinic Proceedings and Cabanac 1993 in FASEB Journal — are real, but neither is a study of sauna hats. Treat the figure as a marketing claim until a citation appears.

Which sauna hat has the better guarantee?

Rí, clearly. A lifetime craftsmanship guarantee covering seam failure and unreasonable pilling, plus 30-day returns with a supplied label. Lanoviss provides a free return label in Canada and the US but no lifetime guarantee.

Do the Rí and Lanoviss hats fit the same heads?

Almost. Rí states 54–62 cm, Lanoviss 55–61 cm — Rí is 1 cm wider at each end. Our sauna hat size guide explains how to measure before ordering from either of us.
