Halsa vs Lanoviss Sauna Hats: An Honest Comparison From One of the Two Brands

Halsa vs Lanoviss Sauna Hats: An Honest Comparison From One of the Two Brands

Halsa is cheaper than us on every model, and if price decides it you should buy Halsa. Their merino hat is $30 USD (about $42 CAD) against our $59.99 CAD, and their wool bucket hat is $20 USD (about $28 CAD). They also have thirteen styles to our one.

We are Lanoviss, so read this as a comparison written by one of the two brands. Everything about Halsa below was verified on shophalsa.com on 25 August 2026, so you can check it yourself in five minutes.

What is Halsa?

Halsa is a Wisconsin sauna accessory brand founded in 2019 by a maker named Valerie, near Milwaukee, selling thirteen wool sauna hat styles from $20 to $35 USD. Orders ship through Amazon fulfilment in 3–5 business days, shipping is free within the United States, and returns run 30 days with the customer paying roughly $6 in return postage.

They also sell on Amazon.ca, which is how most Canadians find them. Their banner claims "10,000+ Sauna Lovers" and a 4.9 average rating; neither is verifiable from outside, so treat both as marketing figures.

Halsa markets its felt as "NordicWool™" — their own trade name for 100% natural wool felt, not a distinct fibre or certification. Nothing wrong with naming your own material; worth knowing that is what it is.

How much does each hat cost?

Every Halsa model undercuts ours, by $18 to $32 CAD depending on which you compare. Prices are from shophalsa.com product pages on 25 August 2026, converted at USD/CAD 1.3861 that day.

Hat Price (USD) ≈ CAD
Halsa Bucket / Foldable / 2-Pack $20.00 ~$27.72
Halsa Pink Bucket $22.00 ~$30.49
Halsa Pink Scalloped $24.00 ~$33.27
Halsa American Flag $25.00 ~$34.65
Halsa Merino Wool $30.00 ~$41.58
Halsa Beanie (Fall 2026) $30.00 ~$41.58
Halsa Viking / Floral (5 mm premium) $35.00 ~$48.51
Lanoviss Merino Wool Sauna Hat — $59.99 CAD

One honest note: a comparison table on Halsa's own site lists the Foldable at $19.99 and the Bucket at $18, while both product pages read $20. We used the product page prices, since that is what you pay at checkout.

Currency matters too. A Canadian buying a $30 USD hat is exposed to the exchange rate and possibly import handling; buying from us is $59.99 CAD flat from Vancouver. If the loonie strengthens, this table goes out of date.

Spec by spec: what is actually different?

The two meaningful differences are felt thickness on the everyday models and whether the hat has a seam. The rest is preference.

Where Halsa is the better buy

Four clear wins, and we are not going to argue with any of them.

Price. $20 USD for a wool bucket hat is genuinely low, and their merino at $30 USD sits roughly 30% below ours in Canadian terms. If this is your first sauna hat and you are not sure you will use it, $28 CAD instead of $60 CAD is the sensible move.

Their 5 mm premium models beat our 3 mm on raw insulation. More felt means more trapped still air, and trapped still air is what insulates. We chose 3 mm as a compromise between insulation, drying time and how the brim folds — but on thermal resistance alone, 5 mm wins and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Choice. Thirteen styles against our one. If you want a scalloped pink hat, a Viking hat or an American flag hat, we do not make one and have no plans to.

US delivery and track record. Amazon fulfilment reaches a US address faster and more predictably than a parcel from Vancouver, and Halsa has traded since 2019 with an established Amazon presence in both countries. That is real reassurance we cannot match yet.

Where we think Lanoviss is the better buy

Three concrete differences, plus one that only matters if you are Canadian.

3 mm against 2 mm on the everyday hats. Halsa's $20 models are 2 mm felt; ours is 3 mm — 50% more material between hot air and your scalp, at a higher price. Against their 5 mm premium models we lose; against the hats most people actually buy from them, we have more felt.

100% merino, stated, on every hat. Merino is a finer fibre than generic wool felt, so it is less scratchy against a wet forehead. Halsa's $30 model is merino; the rest is "100% natural wool", a broader category. Our thickness is published on the product page — theirs is not stated on the merino listing.

Seamless construction. Ours is pressed from one piece with no stitched seam. A seam is where felt is compressed and thread passes through: structurally the thinnest part of a hat and the first place it fails. Halsa does not publish how theirs is built, so we cannot say whether this is a real advantage or a difference on paper — see below.

Returns and currency for Canadians. We pay the return label in both Canada and the US; Halsa's returns cost you about $6 in postage. We price in CAD from Vancouver, so there is no exchange rate and no cross-border handling. In the US, this advantage largely disappears.

All five colours and the full spec are on our 3 mm merino wool sauna hat page.

"I highly recommend it. Great quality, fair price, and exactly as advertised"

What neither of us can prove

Halsa's site claims a wool hat keeps your scalp 15–25 °F cooler and buys 5–10 extra minutes. Those numbers are unsourced, and we cannot support them either.

We looked for the research. There is no published controlled trial measuring scalp temperature or session duration with and without a sauna hat. We wrote that search up in do sauna hats actually work, and the conclusion was uncomfortable for a company selling sauna hats: the mechanism is sound, the effect size is unmeasured.

The physics is documented. Wool insulates by trapping still air, still air conducts heat poorly, and the air at head height runs 80–100 °C while the floor sits near 30 °C. A wool layer slows heat transfer to your scalp. By how many degrees, for how many extra minutes — nobody has published it.

So when any sauna hat brand gives you a precise figure like "15–25 °F cooler," ask where the measurement came from. If the answer is not a study or a published protocol, it is an estimate wearing a lab coat.

What we have not done

We have not bought a Halsa hat, weighed it, measured its felt with calipers or examined its construction. Everything in the spec table above about Halsa comes from Halsa's own published information, not from a hat in our hands.

Weight this accordingly: a brand comparing itself to a competitor it has never handled is doing document review, not product testing.

Until then, treat the 2 mm and 5 mm figures as Halsa's published specifications, not as something we verified.

So which one should you buy?

Buy Halsa if you are in the United States, if price decides it, or if you want a style we do not make. $20 USD for a wool bucket hat delivered in 3–5 days through Amazon is a straightforwardly good deal, and their 5 mm models insulate more than our 3 mm.

Buy Lanoviss if you are in Canada, if you want 3 mm of 100% merino in one seamless piece with the thickness published, or if a paid return label matters. You pay more for a thicker everyday hat from a smaller operation with a simpler return.

Both put an insulating wool layer between 80–100 °C air and your scalp. Neither is a medical device, neither has a study behind it, and the gap is smaller than either of our marketing pages suggests. For the general framework, our guide to how to choose a sauna hat covers thickness, fibre, fit and care.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Halsa sauna hat any good?

Halsa has sold wool sauna hats since 2019 near Milwaukee, with 13 styles from $20 to $35 USD, Amazon fulfilment and 30-day returns. On price, range and US delivery it beats us. We have not dismantled one, so we make no claim about build quality beyond what Halsa publishes.

How much is a Halsa sauna hat compared to Lanoviss?

On 25 August 2026: merino $30 USD (~$42 CAD at 1.3861), bucket and foldable $20 (~$28 CAD), premium 5 mm styles $35 (~$49 CAD). Lanoviss is $59.99 CAD. Halsa is cheaper on every model.

What is NordicWool?

Halsa's own trade name for the 100% natural wool felt in its hats — not a separate fibre, certification or standard. They use 2 mm on everyday hats and 5 mm on premium ones.

How thick should a sauna hat be?

Sauna hat felt runs 2–6 mm. Thicker traps more still air but is stiffer, bulkier and slower to dry. We use 3 mm; Halsa uses 2 mm and 5 mm and argues publicly that 6 mm is overkill.

Does a sauna hat really keep your head 15–25 °F cooler?

No published controlled study supports that figure. It appears on Halsa's marketing uncited and we cannot support it either. Wool slows heat transfer to the scalp; the effect size has never been measured in a peer-reviewed trial.

Does Halsa ship to Canada?

Halsa's free shipping is US-only and returns cost around $6 in postage. They list on Amazon.ca, so Canadians usually buy there. Lanoviss ships from Vancouver and pays the return label in both countries.

Which sauna hat should I buy?

Halsa for lowest price, widest style choice, fastest US delivery, or maximum thickness via their 5 mm models. Lanoviss for 3 mm seamless 100% merino, Canadian pricing, and a paid return label.
